SUMMERCAMP - MARTHA’S VINEYARD
It has been a dream of mine (for years) to come out to the NE and experience Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket. The photos of hydrangeas and grey shacked houses has rung through my travel dreams, and getting to experience this little island has been a true burst of happiness. I’m also happy to be doing this blog, as when I was researching how to get to this island (without a private jet?), I found it quite hard to lock down a really great blog about the whole travel process.. which when you’re taking an uber, plane, train, bus, ferry, etc. to get out here… is quite essential. There are tons of quick turnarounds and times you may miss, tickets to buy, and luggage to track down.
So, let’s start with the flow. If you carbon-copy this, you’ll have the perfect 5 day trip.
#1 - The Plane Tickets
We flew into Boston and honestly JetBlue was amazing. They were accommodating and great with our toddlers. These were without a doubt the cheapest round trip tickets we have ever purchased. I think it was like $300 ROUND TRIP total for all of us (provided the babies are still on the lap). We stayed downtown Boston for a night, hit a Red Sox game, and walked all over the city exploring. It was just enough time in Boston. I’d definitely go back and do the same thing again.
#2 - We took a taxi to the South Station although we could’ve walked in 20 min
#3 - We took the Bus from South Station to Woods Hole, which dropped us right off at the ferry
#4 - We took the ferry from Woods Hole straight to Oaks Bluff and we had a 5 min walk to the hotel
#5 - We walked right up to Summercamp and checked in, then 2 min over to Nancy’s for a family friendly dinner.
Half of the battle is just getting to this island… but once you’re here--- it’s all easy peasy.
Summercamp is absolutely ideal for a “close to everything” family-friendly hotel-- it’s got a huge playroom for kids, bright and fun, and literally looks out on the water.
All in all, Summercamp was the perfect “family” stop for Martha’s Vineyard. I would, however, recommend going to the islands without kids if you want to be less stressed (ha!). It’s a gorgeous experience and very unique. The buildings are renovated from the 1700’s, everything is close and walkable, and the people are so nice.
